The new year begins with an urgent call to artists to participate in a fundraising exhibition to help support the Spruill Gallery. Please join us on Thursday, February 9 for the opening reception of THE GOODS: Selections from the artists studio, an exhibition and sale of small works by BIG artists. This pin-up style show will consist of primarily two dimensional work and small sculpture.

The Spruill gallery has long recognized artists in the community, offering opportunities to emerging and established artists. We are asking for support in helping the Gallery in this challenging economic time. We understand that these are challenging times for us all. We also understand that as artists, you are often asked to contribute your work for many events, but your participation in THE GOODS will make all the difference in insuring continued opportunities for artists and maintaining the quality exhibitions and programs that have been a vital part of the Spruill Gallery and the Atlanta arts community.

Requirements:

1. One to three works of art that are ready to hang. Art can be pinned to the wall or hung with any device you provide.
2. Sale price should not exceed $500.00 (retail) and we are asking for (at least) a 50 percentage.
3. Deadline for drop off is
Thursday, January 26, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM
4. Pick up is Sunday or Monday, March 11 or 12.

The achingly familiar, creeping anxiety about forgetting some small but crucial task hangs over artist Laura Noel’s installation To Do, part of the exhibition of her work collectively titled Subject Matters now on view at Spruill Gallery. Noel collected 3,000 to-do lists from friends, acquaintances, and strangers and covered every inch of wall space in a room of the gallery, a late nineteenth-century former farmhouse on Ashford Dunwoody Road in suburban Atlanta. It’s touching and disquieting to see so many lists together, and spending time with the installation does bring to light some interesting subject matter...

...For the viewer, the lists might suggest a touching shared
humanity—we are all our own pathetic taskmasters, reminding
ourselves to buy milk and cut the grass. But Noel makes clear
in her artist’s statement that such minutia keeps people’s
minds away from larger philosophical questions, a sort of
absorption she hopes to avoid.

"I created a series of photographs of books that have been withdrawn from libraries. Some of these books were rejected as no longer relevant to current culture, others were battered, and some were the victim of popularity - too many copies and not enough room.

These books and papers represent time and yet, are inevitably destroyed by its passing. The librarian's "Withdrawn" stamp is like a silent slap across the face. A once loved volume is ostracized from the family home."

An Pham, a recent graduate of University of Georgia's Master of Fine Arts program, is the break-out artist of Spruill Gallery's “Emerging Artists 2011.”

The artist works with a wide palette of materials, from handmade paper and old books to plastic strips, scotch tape and – most wondrously in this exhibit -- rubber bands. Pham crochets, plaits, knots, coils and otherwise manipulates this mundane item into mysterious sculptures, which she presents like the gifts they are in hand-made boxes.

It's a good thing that Pham wants you to touch them because they are irresistibly tactile. They also give off that rubber-band smell and, more profoundly, the feeling of intensity that comes from the hours of repetition and minute manipulations that making these works require. She manipulates books and their pages with similar inventiveness. I'm watching her.

Our Town: Spruill Center for the Arts

The edgy, contemporary art isn’t the only thing that draws hundreds of Dunwoody locals to openings at the Spruill Gallery. The parties are equally famous for the sumptuous platters of shrimp, deviled eggs and other Southern staples supplied by the 49-member volunteer guild that supports the nonprofit.

Snacking on pimento cheese while an avant garde video screens over a fireplace built almost 200 years ago is a sign of how deeply the gallery, and the 19th century farmhouse it sits in, is a literal intersection of past and present, in an area where “past” is in short supply.

The Spruill family once owned and farmed most of the land Dunwoody’s prime spots sit on today, including Perimeter Mall. In 1991, Gerry Spruill donated the family farmhouse to the arts group known at the time as the North Arts Center that Spruill was also instrumental in starting up in 1975 with a group of friends who wanted to take art classes locally.

The group changed its name to Spruill Center for the Arts when it received the house, which has become something of a community icon thanks in part to the giant Jason Kofke mural proclaiming “Everything Will Be OK” that’s on a log barn outside the home.

Gallery Director Hope Cohn invites new and pedigreed artists to use the space as a canvas, including a 2010 exhibit remembering Hurricane Katrina where artist Elyse Defoor spray-painted the outside of the house with the famous red X’s search parties used after the storm.

In the back, a new garden project started in June supplies cucumbers, peppers, squash and tomatoes to food banks and co-ops.

“When you’re here, it feels like a village,” Cohn said. “You forget everything you’re surrounded by.”

Chelsea explores temporal memory, space and movement in this experimental piece.

Aaron Keuter and Ashley Anderson 'XxxCuzx Me'
“XxzCuzx Me” is a meditation on chaos, evolution, and machinism, set to a delightfully frenetic song by the group, Crystal Castles. Symmetrical in its form, it invites the viewer to consider the organized whole of the robotic organism that stems from the maddeningly uncertain and intricate detail of its singular parts.

Site Unseen at Spruill: Exploring Atlanta’s Unbuilt Architecture

The organizing premise behind Spruill Gallery's Site Unseen is straightforward enough: a show of unbuilt work from the last decade by 10 Atlanta-based firms and designers. What is less obvious is whether, on the whole or in part, you will leave the show lamenting the demise of these projects or relived that they were never built. I suspect most visitors will be both saddened and pleased after surveying the work on hand.

It is a truism, as the literature accompanying the show points out, that the victors write architectural history. City skylines, for better and often for worse, are defined by the built rather than the absent. Nevertheless, unbuilt projects occupy a special niche in architecture. Some fall into the category of “paper architecture”—projects never destined for construction due to various economic constraints, technological limitations, or social conventions. Then there are competition entries, fairly detailed projects that either just missed out on first place or came in dead last, you’ll never know just by looking. These are plentiful thanks to the seeming inability of some clients (particularly museums and other institutions) to pick an architect without first having a beauty contest. Finally, there are those buildings that client and architect both wished to see to completion, but, alas, a global financial meltdown intervened and cleaned everyone’s clock. You might consider this last sub-category paper architecture against its will.

"Site Unseen" at Spruill Gallery

Spruill Gallery’s “Site Unseen” is, on one level, about what might have been. Plans, models and renderings detail stillborn architectural projects for Spruill Gallery, Atlanta Contemporary Art Center and residential clients. Also on view are entries for competitions that others won or, as in the case of Lord, Aeck and Sargent’s concept for One Museum Place, for a project that will never be. (Its empty lot and unsightly fence just across from the High Museum is an anti-monument to the cratered economy.)

Yet, these unbuilt projects by nine Atlanta firms are very much alive with ideas, creativity and insight into the architectural process. The exhibit reveals the considerable effort devoted to research and development. Particularly evident is the careful consideration of the relationship of a building to its site and the varied ways architects approach such issues as topography, trees and the behavior of sunlight. It’s almost always an iterative process of experiment and refinement, evolving from sketches and computer simulation to three-dimensional massing studies and models.

The Spruill Garden Project had its first harvest this past Monday. Volunteers celebrated with a champagne toast.

Master Gardener, Shawn Bard, invites you to the next harvest this coming Tuesday, June 21 at 7:00 PM

“We would love to have anybody and everybody come out for the harvest. Please be advised that this will take approximately 30 minutes. This will occur on a weekly basis throughout the growing season. However, the day and time may change due to harvest conditions.”

We will keep you posted about upcoming harvests and other garden events.

A big thank you to the garden volunteers for all of your time and effort. You reap what you sow and we are very lucky to be on the same team!

Garden Party Opening A Huge Success!

Excerpts from Tom Oder's article, Spruill Gallery hosts garden party for the ages

Shawn Bard can grow a garden. Hope Cohn can throw a party. Put the two get together on a delightful spring evening at a farmhouse with a history that spans three centuries and what do you get? A garden party for the ages.

“Look at this!” Hope exclaimed during the reception. “Everyone’s in the garden.

“The first week of May there was nothing. Just nothing. And now we have tomatoes!”

Indeed, there are not only tomatoes … but also sweet potatoes, radishes, dill, basil and various kinds of squash. Some of the plants were grown from seed, some were bought at the Dunwoody Community Garden plant sale and some were donated by a local men’s club. All of the produce will be donated to Malachi’s Storehouse, the Food Pantry at St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church on North Peachtree Road in Dunwoody, or the Community Action Center serving Roswell and Sandy Springs.

This blog is often informative, but rarely personal. Today I have decided to share my beginnings in the world of contemporary art.

This is me, Jennifer Price, with a few of my favorite Nexus books.

Fresh out of college, I landed a great opportunity as an intern at the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center. I worked closely with this organization for nearly a year and I learned many things about the Atlanta art scene, art administration, and non profits in general, but one of my favorite indulgences of working at the Contemporary was discovering the books of Nexus Press.

As an intern, you are asked to do things that no one else wants to do and you do it gladly. You do it for the experience, the foot in the door, the recommendations. I have to admit, when I was assigned to inventory the Nexus books, this was my initial reaction. I remember thinking, "Counting books? Is this what I studied for?" Once I began the task, my attitude made a complete 180 degree turn. The books of Nexus opened my eyes to the art of printing and the beauty of artist's made books. It also fueled my passion for the arts and planted a seed of interest in Atlanta's art organizations, past and present.

Since that summer, I have moved on to another great institution, Spruill Center for the Arts, but I have not forgotten my humble beginnings and the spark that lit my fire. This is why I am tingling with excitement over JoAnne's lecture tonight. This talk will be personal insight into an organization that was loved nationwide, and is still influencing artists and art historians today.

In a megalopolitan area that remythologizes its self-image every six months or so, it requires only four or five years for things, people, and institutions to be utterly forgotten. This is not intrinsically bad, since history moves onward and Atlanta has been even more obsessed with newness than the rest of America. The problem comes when the reasons and motivations are forgotten; these tend to be overlooked even when the people and institutions behind them are remembered.

Nexus Press is one such institution, and, while it is unfortunate that it was allowed to go out of existence, it is even more unfortunate that the details of the place’s DIY spirit have slipped into our largely unrecollected history.

Now, we can revisit the work of Nexus Press, the nationally known and respected book art press that flourished here between 1976 and 2003.

A display of artist books published by the press is the heart of “Out of Print,” a group show centered on printmaking, at Spruill Gallery.

The exhibition is also a timeline of sorts, as it surveys printmakers and acknowledges printmaking organizations from the ’70s to the present. Included are Nexus Press, Rolling Stone Press and the newest, the Atlanta Printmakers Studio, as well as college programs at the Atlanta College of Art, Georgia State University, Savannah School of Art and Design and the University of Georgia.

That this is a living tradition is announced right when you walk in the door.

Review: Engaging “Align” at Spruill Gallery draws a multimedia bead on line

Contrary to retail blandishments, one size never fits all. Yet, Hope Cohn, Spruill Gallery's energetic director, organizes exhibitions that serve the multiple and sometimes competing interests of the community, offering a judicious mix of readily accessible and high-concept work by an equally broad cross-section of artists. “Align: An Exploration into the Artistic Use of Line,” on view through March 19, is a case in point.

High on the accessibility index, Jeffery Merritt’s charming wire animal sculptures exemplify line in space. They bring to mind Alexander Calder’s circus, though the self-taught artist knew nothing about them when he began bending wire. The drawings George Vlosich makes on Etch-A-Sketch screens are not profound, but anyone who’s tried the thing will marvel at his virtuosity. It’s hard to get it do anything but horizontal and vertical; Vlosich not only makes organic line but also shading and subtle detail.

The work in ALIGN explores how line defines space, inspires meaning and pushes spatial boundaries by challenging the surface and taking the line beyond the borders. Traditionally we consider line to be a mark, an exact stroke, but the definition of line has been redefined as artists and technology have seized opportunity to look beyond convention. A line may define an object, but also an object is defined by the space that surrounds the line.

My photography from Lacoste, France, seeks abstraction in everyday objects through attention to light, shadow, and line. The wire imagery is part of a photography series that looks at the various forms, installations, and locations of the exterior wiring found on the buildings in the Luberon Valley. Through the rigorous cropping of these found scenes the functional wires become formally beautiful lines drawn over the surfaces of the villages.

Something about Michael David Murphy’s exhibition at Spruill Gallery (closing this Saturday, October 30, with a reception from 3-5PM) strikes the viewer with the photographer’s disarming warmth, spontaneous intelligence, and his refusal to ever stop working. While Murphy’s video installation and photos fill most of the gallery, one room showcases a rather sweet, though understated, series of smart paintings by abstrationist Margaret Fletcher.

Instead of dwarfing the significance of either artist, however, the asymmetry compliments both: Fletcher’s work feels like an intimate solo show seamlessly tucked inside Murphy’s more comprehensive retrospective. The yin-yang schema suggests subtle harmonies of photo-based and traditional media, representation and abstraction, male and female artists, and an established career shown alongside a relative newcomer.

Although the current show counts as Fletcher’s fine-art debut, the two artists have more in common than one might think. Murphy earned his MFA in poetry, but he switched careers and now serves as Program Manager for Atlanta Celebrates Photography. (Click here to read Susannah Darrow’s 2009 interview with Murphy.) Similarly, more than a decade has passed since Fletcher earned her master’s degree in architecture from Harvard, but now she paints. Her design concepts, inspired by her architectural background, are unfortunately easy to miss—she makes “paintings” by applying tiny press-on letters in Helvetica script.

Emerging artist Margaret Fletcher finds her way to an impressive debut

Margaret Fletcher makes an impressive debut at Spruill Gallery. Her elegant drawings and paintings achieve a meditative calm, in part by balancing opposites. Both lush and spare, they read as surface and space, and their effect is allusive and elusive.

Fletcher’s core language, as it were, is press-on letters in a crisp Helvetica script, each smaller than a coffee ground, which she positions in patterns that suggest swarms constellations, maps, microscopic particles.

"Margaret Fletcher makes a stunning debut in her concurrent exhibition of drawing and paintings. She composes these ethereal abstractions using press-on letters that are no bigger than the head of a pin. She has the crisp Helvetica letters specially made and places them with the precision of an architect, which she is, who knows that God is in the details.

The letters are fixed, like insects in amber, by layers of milky, translucent encaustic (wax), sometimes infused with an aqueous blue-green. Her application is so extremely thin and smooth that it makes other encaustic paintings look vulgar.

These small works may evoke the stars in the night sky, swarms of microscopic beings, or other naturally occurring patterns. In one series, the letters hover at the edges, a suggestion of dispersal. Mostly, they are elegant, meditative and really,  really beautiful."

Review: Michael David Murphy explores instability of photographic truth in smart solo at Spruill

Sometimes it seems that it could not have been an accident of history that photography and writing fused to form photography’s very name, which conceives of camera-made images as inscriptive illusions made using light, “light writings.”

It isn’t just that so many important photographers have been writers, but that photography as a medium is deeply solicitous of language. What is more natural in response to a picture than to broker it with words — to talk about it, to it, around it, to position and reposition it in terms of “stories” that it exclaims and hints at, prompts and doesn’t quite finish? Is it wrong to say that a photograph is a disquieted form of language, language displaced from grammar and usage, expelled from words so that the surfaces of the world might be made to beckon names and identities, and be reconstituted as sound and the logic of speech?

“Certainty Principle,” Michael David Murphy’s smart new exhibition at Spruill Gallery, offers a droll and philosophically rich meditation on the complications of photographic thinking as the mutual searching of words and pictures.

The show consists of four rooms, three containing photographic works and one with video — each room conceived as an autonomous statement in a larger, dialectical project. The first in Murphy’s suite of inquiries, Spruill’s front gallery contains gridded clusters of untitled, undated pictures all made in public places.

Taking on the guise of an everyman with a camera who appears anywhere and everywhere without explanation, Murphy approaches the commonplace as a field of random connections, or more strictly, random connections that seem ineluctable once made. He is a conceptualist alternately chasing and being chased by his own observational acuity, an artist for whom clear-sightedness is enigmatic. He is deeply concerned with photography as a power to heed.

Many of the photographs in this room deal in Americana and Americanism, intervening by turns gently and archly into culturally unself-conscious events and locations, both high and low. With what seems like remarkably consistent good luck, Murphy throws out vision upon vision of American normality coughing up its contradictions...

Final Days of Katrina: Five Years of Reflection

Mr. DeShong and Mr. Adams have been returning to New Orleans every year to film their experience since Hurricane Katrina. This footage can be seen in their work The Katrina Project: A Photographers View of New Orleans After the Storm included in the exhibition Katrina: Five Years of Reflection.

"After coming back home, we decided to make this a project. We had to go back again. On Nov. 4-6 we went back. The message that we received from the residents of New Orleans was "Show The World These Images." They also wanted us to encourage people to visit their City, and help the economy..."

Please join us this Saturday, August 28th at 12 noon for Katrina: Five Years of Reflection: An Artist Talk with Elyse Defoor, Lori Gordon and special guest, Natasha Trethewey.

Atlanta artist Elyse Defoor will be presenting her body of work, X.U.ME, her visual reaction to seeing her beloved New Orleans destroyed. The grim Xs were first a code used by search and rescue teams after Katrina. Defoor's work reproduces these markings to capture the haunting emotion of post-Katrina New Orleans. Mississippi Gulf Coast native Lori Gordon will describe her mixed-media work. When Katrina struck in 2005, uprooting Gordon's home and life, she returned to her art using the materials available to her - namely, rubble and found objects. We are honored to present renowned poet and Pulitzer-prize winner Natasha Trethewey as our special guest for this talk. Her upcoming book, Beyond Katrina: A Meditation on the Mississippi Gulf tells her family's story interwoven with the history of her hometown, Gulfport, Mississippi. Take a look at Cinque Hicks' column on the impact of Hurricane Katrina on the art world, and how that is playing out in three Atlanta exhibits, including Spruill Gallery, this month.

In late August 2005, the levees on the canals south of Lake Pontchartrain gave way and plunged New Orleans into the contemporary art world. If that sounds like a creepy thing to say, it's not my idea. New Orleans gallery owner Arthur Roger and others told the Christian Science Monitor last year how the storm yanked New Orleans artists into a conversation with the world outside the Mississippi Delta as never before, prompting new art that was less insular and somehow more globally relevant. Brad Pitt showed up with his pink houses, and curator Dan Cameron launched Prospect.1, a citywide art biennial cut from the cloth of the Venice Biennale. Nearly overnight, the city joined the list of nationally significant art destinations.

El Play is a thirty minute documentary recently showcased at El Museo del Barrio for the Havana Film Festival. El Play follows the hard-knock journey of a Dominican teen hoping to make it into baseball's major leagues. Set in San Pedro do Macoris, a Dominican city famous for producing beisbol superstars, the documentary offers a rare look ito players' struggle to escape poverty.

The film's director, Pablo A. Medina grew up between Washington DC and New Jersey where he skate-boarded and listened to the Clash. He now runs Cubanica and is Assistant Professor at Parsons The New School for Design. He likes to design typefaces, posters, and books. El Play recently won an award at the Urbanworld Film Festival. He lives in the East Village of New York City.

Spruill Gallery’s “LatinGA” features eight Atlanta artists with Latin roots, but don’t expect insights or epiphanies about being Latin or Georgian. The artists come from different countries, and their origins play very different roles in their art -- for some not at all. Gallery director Hope Cohn uses the theme as an umbrella rather than a scaffold, a way to corral a group of artists who merit our attention. The exhibit succeeds quite well as a series of mini-solo displays.

The bottom line: Spruill Gallery does a good job of showcasing undersung Georgia artists, as it does here with a group whom you’ll want to know about.

A few days ago, the House Appropriations Committee voted in a budget for the 2011 fiscal year that cuts funding so drastically for the GCA that the organization would likely cease to exist entirely. This would give Georgia the distinction of being the only state or territory in the country without an arts agency. Clearly, this is a potentially monumental travesty that would be of significant detriment every artist and student in the state. We believe arts funding is integral to supporting cultural and artistic development in Georgia and sustaining the budget should be a priority.

Georgia Council for the arts (GCA) is a state agency with the mission to provide access to the arts for all Georgians. The agency strives for 100% statewide coverage in the support of arts programming through grants, which are competitive applications for funding that are adjudicated by peers. The GCA provides a range of grants and funding opportunities for nonprofit arts organizations, individual artists, as well as acting as advocates for access to state art funding by underserved, small communities.

Please sign this petition if you are against the proposed budget cuts and wish to support the arts in the state of Georgia.

Arts Agency Executive Director to Discuss Proposed Elimination

Hundreds of artists and supporters protest proposed cuts in arts funding at the Georgia State Capitol in downtown Atlanta. The House Appropriations Committee voted to eliminate the Georgia Council for the Arts budget for FY 2011. Protesters say this could mean that Georgia will be the only state and territory that will have no state arts agency. For more pictures from yesterdays march, click here.

ATLANTA - Georgia Council for the Arts Executive Director Susan Weiner will appear on Lawmakers, a news production of Georgia Public Broadcasting. The segment was taped Monday morning and will air Tuesday, April 20 at 7:00 P.M. During an on-air interview Weiner addresses the pending elimination of Georgia Council for the Arts from the State budget.

Last week, the House of Representatives passed their FY2011 budget which includes eliminating Georgia Council for the Arts (GCA). Remaining grant funds would be transferred to the Department of Community Affairs, leaving Georgia the only state or territory in the nation without an arts agency. Rationale given for the House action was that GCA is a "duplicative agency" that could be replaced by the Georgia Arts Alliance, created by the Legislature in 2008, and another non-arts related state agency.

Weiner provided several reasons during the interview why this is not feasible. "GCA receives the National Endowment for the Arts State Partnership Grant with a value of almost $900,000 as well as additional funding from regional arts agency South Arts of $200,000," she said. "These grants require receipt by a state entity with a mission and programming that is dedicated to the arts. Neither the Georgia Arts Alliance nor the Department of Community Affairs fulfills these requirements. Georgia stands to lose more than one-million dollars in national and regional funding if this agency is eliminated."

Facts discussed during the interview also include the impact of the arts on the state's economy. According to a recent study conducted by Price-Waterhouse Coopers, 380 arts and cultural organizations in the state had a net impact of $387 million and contributed more than $18.6 million in tax revenue.

Lawmakers has covered the Georgia General Assembly for more that forty seasons and airs every night the Assembly convenes. The program can be viewed on any of Georgia Public Broadcasting's nine network affiliate stations.

Georgia Council for the Arts is the state agency that provides support for nonprofit arts organizations in Georgia. Established in 1965 as the Georgia Commission on the Arts, its mission is to encourage excellence in the arts, support the arts' many forms of expression and create access to the arts for all Georgians by providing funding, leadership, programming and other services. Funding for Georgia Council for the Arts is provided by appropriations from the Georgia General Assembly, the National Endowment for the Arts and other public and private sources.

"Simply put, Susan Archie is responsible for some of the most memorable cover art of the last decade. Working as a freelance graphic designer with a number of loyal record labels, Atlanta’s Dust-to-Digital and Table of the Elements among them, Archie’s work has been repeatedly nominated for Box Set Packaging Grammy awards (four in the past six years) and praised by the New York Times. As anyone who has picked up a copy of Goodbye, Babylon or Screamin’ & Hollerin’ the Blues can tell you, Archie brings a true artist’s attention to detail in her designs. The idea of “play” has gained a prominent position as a point of research lately, so for the Spruill Gallery to cover the territory was not a great conceptual leap. The implementation of the idea is where the power of the exhibition lay. Curator Hope Cohn’s statement directly addressed the sociology of play and set the stage to celebrate “artists [who] use the creative (playful) act to interpret the world around them.” While considering the potential of each individual artist’s work, the curator established new connections by her arrangement of works and thoughtful use of negative space. It may be the difficulty of developing themed group shows that has encouraged fewer of them being mounted locally; with a strong, simple concept, curator Cohn selected work from among a geographically diverse group of artists and proved the words in her curatorial statement. I’m encouraged that suburban Atlanta continues to provide a venue for exploring relevant ideas through contemporary art—to the benefit of supporters and artists alike.

'on the flip side' artist, Jorge Colombo was voted one of TIME Magazine's Top 10 Everything of 2009.

No homage here — this cover is a true original. New Yorker covers are often
topical, and they are known for their wit and keen cultural timing. But several
times a year, they just run covers that capture the New York–ness of America's
greatest city. This cover found a groundbreaking way to do that, featuring a
piece by illustrator-designer Jorge Colombo that was created on an iPhone
applicaton called Brushes. If it had been done just for novelty's sake, it would
be noteworthy but not significant. But this illustration meets the impeccable
standards of New Yorker covers — an accomplishment in any medium.

Creative Loafing interviewed Spruill Gallery's Emerging Artist, Ting Ying Han.

When Ting Ying Han left Taipei, Taiwan, a few years ago to pursue art in the U.S., the 23-year-old left behind more than a city. In many ways, Han also shed her identity as she — and her family and friends — knew it. She gladly shook off the restraints of her rigid Chinese upbringing to freely pursue art and sculpture in Atlanta. But the metamorphosis hasn't been without its challenges. Han leads a double life of sorts, her family ties becoming increasingly tenuous as more time passes. It's not a huge surprise, then, that Han's work fixates on family, objects and spatial relationtionships. "Missing," her meticulously crafted rice table now on view in Spruill Gallery's Emerging Artists 2009, is a heartfelt meditation on absence.
